The problem of handicapped persons has been present for long in this part of Croatia (Primorsko-goranska county.) Due to the specific circumstances this population has always been larger than the average population in the developed world, even than other parts of Croatia. In this region from total of 300,000 inhabitants, is officially recorded 676 disabled persons (287 children and 389 adults.) At the beginning of war in Croatia, in 1991, all children from hospital of Vrlika (Knin area) evacuated to various destinations because the rebel army of General Mladic occupied a place Vrlika. Of these 300 children, 24 of them were transported and hospitalized in Kraljevica in unsuitable current condition. Rotary Club has immediately established the committee for permanent monitoring and helping these children in Kraljevica.
A special committee of club (four members) leads this project with permanent support from the other members. Undoubtedly, it's the main activity of our 32 members.
The entire value of our efforts in this period (from 1991 till today) is about 450,000 DEM ($ 300,000 USD.) If we take into account the money that our team managed to acquire for this project despite the existent circumstances, we are very pleased with the results.
During the last period, with determination and involvement in help for handicapped children in Kraljevica, Rotary Club Rijeka slowly becomes known and recognized as larger organization in this human venture. The satisfaction and recognition for our activities comes daily through local press, as confirmation for assisting to those who need it most. Through this project, the Rotary Club of Rijeka is recognized as a leading organization in helping local authorities in solving the problems of handicapped children in the region.
In collaboration with RC Nechertalom (Switzerland) we repair all installations of central heating, adjust windows and the part of roof repairs at the hospital in Kraljevica. In collaboration with RC Llanishen (Cardiff-United Kingdom) and the Fire Brigade from London we organized a basic building repairs and interior painting.
1996, in the course of the project, we have received recognition of our district in 1910 at the annual conference in Baden, between 75 projects. As a long term solution to the problems of disabled persons in our district, the council of the city of Rijeka was allocated a 6500m2 for building a new home for these children. Currently 80 handicapped children and adults desperately wait, including those hospitalized in Kraljevica.
In the existing circumstances, our Rotary Club is assigned as the main partner for the provision of the necessary equipment for the new hospital. Meanwhile, concern for children in Kraljevica continuously runs.
We invite all Rotary clubs that have not yet been involved in other projects to join us in this extraordinary venture beyond our means.

Is it beneficial to all concerned?
Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
