Dear ladies and gentlemen, friends,
Taking the lead of the club represents a special honour for each Rotarian, especially in this year. The moment that you are suggested as the new leader of the club is a precious one. It is the moment when others put their trust in you, whereas you in return accept that trust. And you must strive to deserve it. And no matter how much we prepare ourselves for that moment ever since entering the Rotary world, we receive it unprepared.
The Rotary movement is a group of people that meets spontaniously and acts together voluntarily. Without pressure. Individuals should not be put under the spotlight though. They may stand out, but only through the community. Rotary clubs are chains made of different intertwined friends/links, and we all know that each chain is as strong as its weakest link. Individuals are not all equally involved in everyday club activities and that is exactly what makes leading them such an excitement. To bring out the best in everyone that they can voluntarily give back to the community they are active in, without feeling burdened.
Rotary club Rijeka has a long tradition. Twenty five years is a long period to go and it should be properly celebrated. The club matured long time ago. And it is precisely during this period of maturation that we experienced turbulence. The dangers that arose in the club could have had serious consequences. However, Rotary would not be Rotary had we not surpassed the issues. I would like to point out two of my predecessors as responsible for the consolidation of the club’s integrity: pr. Vidoje and pr. Sandro. Their energy, enthusiasm and leadership skills have brought fresh air into this club. By becoming a mixed club we have started looking at things from different perspectives and expanded our horizons.
I would like to thank them, as well as all previous presidents, who have inspired me and showed great support in preparing me for this today.
A long history is an honour, but also a commitment. The goal of Rotary International is to improve people’s lives, build tolerance and understanding. RC Rijeka has already proven its committment to that goal. A thorough reconstruction of the Fortica Center in Kraljevica, charity concerts “Be Here” for the reconstruction of the Kantrida Children’s Hospital in Rijeka, scholarships for talented pupils and students, help with the reconstruction of Pećine Primary School are just some of the projects that we have took part in. We truly have a lot to be proud of and, please, forgive me if I left out something that is most important to You. It is going to be hard to continue with such quality work, but knowing RC Rijeka, I don’t doubt we will succeed in our intentions.
When we talk about idealism and dreams, do not say what you cannot do and that we cannot change the world. Dreams are just the beginning. We must roll our sleeves and make our dreams come true. There is no “we should”, “we ought to” or “could we?”. There is only “we are doing” and “we will do”.
It is necessary to continue strengthening interpersonal relations in the club in the year to come. The club premises should be a place of joyful and pleasant gatherings, which requires the purchase of additional equipment. Cooperation with the Dr. Viktor Ružić Fond will be more constructive. We will work more with the youth since Rotaract is a natural source of new Rotarians. We will continue with the registration of the intiated international projects in cooperation with other clubs. We will organize the sixth in a row charity concert “Be Here”, with which we will finish the restoration of the Pediatric Clinic of the Clinical Hospital Center in Rijeka. We will organize Rotary Fiumanka this year as well. We have already confirmed the cooperation in two humanitarian projects with other clubs from Slovenia. Twinnings have been confirmed... And last, but not least - we will organize a decent celebration of the 25th anniversary of the club.
Wishes and plans may be overambitious, but it is due to Your strong personalities, enthusiasm, energy, devotion, sense of humour and positive attitude that keep me believing in our success. We cannot rest on our laurels. Therefore, I expect you to think about the ways of keeping our club’s glory and success. As the saying goes: who wants to do something finds a way, who does not finds an excuse.
I believe this year will be a successful one. I believe that we will accomplish the set goals together. I believe in friendship because having a friend is good, but being a friend - even better.

Is it the truth?
Is it beneficial to all concerned?
Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
Is it fair to all concerned?
